Trevor(G0TEE) teaching Rachel.

On Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th February 2005, some members assisted at the Special event station GB2FAS established at the headquarters of the 1st Astley Scouts for World Thinking Day on the Air.

Scouts and guides use this annual event, with assistance from radio amateur enthusiasts, to contact other scouts and guides around the world to promote friendship through the exchange of greetings messages.

Hugh (M1NTO) calling!
In all 88 QSO were made, on a weekend where band conditions were not particularly good. The only guide to attend the event, Rachel, showed great aptitude for CW and Trevor taught her 10 letters of the alphabet in under half-an-hour. She was presented with her badge at the sing-song around the camp fire on Saturday night, where, much to his delight, our Stan (M1HLL), having achieved 63 turns on the coil, received a resounding rendition of “Happy Birthday” from all the scouts, guides, and leaders. He said that he was quite moved by this spontaneous gesture.

a good day was had by all

Rachel receiving her communications badge.
The weekend was especially satisfying as not only did we help 18 scouts and one guide to obtain their Communicators badge, but a great deal of enthusiasm for the hobby was expressed by some of the youngsters, and some not so young helpers! The participants logged 25 contacts each, learned the phonetic alphabet and some “Q” codes, and tuned a signal on their HF rig, and, of course, exchanged greetings messages.

Scout Leader, Jason Bridson, himself a radio amateur, (but yet to obtain his callsign), thanked all members of the West Manchester Radio Club for their invaluable assistance, and in turn, our Sectretary, Trevor, who held the notice of variation, expressed our appreciation for being fed and supplied with cups of tea, and commented on how well behaved and attentive the youngsters had been, and that all members who attended had much enjoyed the event.

this makes amateur radio worthwhile..
